WWX17: LOVE IS A LEGACY

WAYWESX17: Love is a Legacy (with shoe donation)

On Saturday, July 12, from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM, the community gathered at Mount Calvary Church, 1000 Stella St, Fort Worth, TX for  WWX17: 3rd Annual Hot-Time in the City Community Event annual summer event rooted in remembrance, service, and acts of solidarity and neighborly love for the benefit of Texas’s unhoused population.

The WayWesX17 Homeless Project was created in loving memory of Wesley Pearce Brown, who was born in 1990 with Potter’s Syndrome and lived for only 23 minutes, and Waymond Patrick Brown II, who passed away unexpectedly in 2012 from sudden cardiac arrest at the age of 23. Their legacies continue to live on through love, legacy, and action, and through the life and witness of their only remaining living son, Kristopher Xavier Brown, whose presence carries forward the family's story with strength, grace, and purpose.

The 501(c)(3) organization focused on direct relief to the unhoused community during the hottest months of the Texas summer providing toiletries, hygiene kits, cold water, and other essential supplies. The event also promoted literacy among children and teens, securing books and offering scholarships to young people who committed a modest amount of their time to volunteer.

This year, we also collected shoes in advance of the event.

Donation bins were set up at Mount Calvary Church every Sunday leading up to July 12, culminating in a final push for shoes on the day of the event.

All new or gently used shoes were donated to a partnering organization that recycles them for global distribution. In returnWWX17 received a check based on the total weight of the shoes collected, funds that went directly toward supporting unhoused residents and providing critical summer supplies.

The WayWesX17 Homeless Project was only possible because of the generosity of people like you. Here's how many made a difference:

  • Donated Shoes: New or gently used shoes were dropped off at Mount Calvary Church donation bins each Sunday and on the day of the event.
  • Donated Goods: Supporters contributed books, school supplies, hygiene products, bottled water, and summer relief items for families and individuals in need.
  • Gave Financially: Monetary donations helped us purchase supplies, fund scholarships, and serve more people with care and dignity.
  • Volunteered: From setting up and distributing supplies to simply being a kind presence, every moment of service was deeply valued.

Love is measured neither in minutes nor years, but in the everyday moments of grace we offer one another. It’s those small, loving acts, when woven together, that create a lasting legacy. And that’s why we do them again, and again.

In acts of service, solidarity, and care,
